Jangan salah paham. Orang Ateis tak butuh agama dan buku ini tidak menceritakan "agama kaum Ateis", melainkan menceritakan agama kepada mereka yang tidak percaya kepada agama (baca: ateis).
Anda percaya dengan makhluk halus yang dikenal sebagai Ratu Laut Selatan? Kalau tidak, saya akan menulis sebuah buku agar Anda mengerti tentang Ratu Laut Selatan dan manfaat atau gunanya percaya kepada Ratu Laut Selatan. Kurang lebih begitulah maksud buku itu.
Salah satu point penting buku ini, menurut Woods, adalah:
De Botton fluently identifies how religion traditionally addressed social needs before offering his own secular proposal for meeting them anew. For example, religion has traditionally provided a sense of community that can override divisions of class or income. We might therefore regain this sense of togetherness through rituals that mimic, say, the Eucharistic service. De Botton suggests a restaurant where "our fear of strangers would recede" and "the poor would eat with the rich." And Jerusalem's Wailing Wall might be replaced by electronic billboards "that would anonymously broadcast our inner woes," thereby reminding us that "we are none of us alone in the extent of our troubles and our lamentations."
Artinya, agama itu sebenarnya adalah ramuan sekuler dengan wadah sakral. Agama menemukan masalah-masalah sosial dan memberi solusi sekuler lewat cara-cara yang agamis: ritual. Woods, hanya saja, meragukan tawaran-tawaran buku ini. Masalah kaum ateis dengan agama, terutama, adalah soal watak kelembagaannnya yang selalu otoriter: mendikte kita soal baik dan buruk. Jadi, menurut Woods, "Religion for Atheists is provocative and well-intentioned. It is perhaps just a little too sure that it knows what is best for us."
